This is another Lord Krishna-related song of dahi handi (Curd pot). Lord Krishna would steal butter or curd from mud pots in the homes of Gopis. Likewise, boys in large groups move about in a large area near their homes to loot dahi handis in the area. They form human pyramids and the leader reaches the top and breaks the handi signifying the looting of the handi. He gets all the stuff tied up with the handi including money.
Movie: This song appears in the 1982 super hit movie Khuddaar (A Person with Self-Respect) directed by Ravi Tandon and produced by F K Rattonsey and Anwar Ali. This movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, late Parveen Babi, late Sanjeev Kumar, late Vinod Mehra, late A K Hangal, Madhu Malini, Bindya Goswami, etc. This movie was remade as Padikkadavan in Tamil starring Rajnikanth and Driver Babu in Telugu with Sobhan Babu. The Hindi movie was released during the same week when Amitabh Bachchan was critically injured during the shooting of Coolie in Bangalore.
Hari (Sanjeev Kumar) is much older than his 2 school-going stepbrothers – Govind and Rajesh. He brings them up as his own children. When he marries, his wife, Seema (Tanuja) harbors ill-will for the 2 boys. When Hari leaves his home for giving his Law exams for a period of 2 months, Seema mistreats the 2 children and they leave the house. They get into a train and land in Mumbai.
After doing menial labor and even being kidnapped to be beggars, they escape and are brought home by a widower Rahim (A K Hangal). Rahim has a son Anwar and a daughter Farida (Madhu Malini). Govind (Amitabh Bachchan) wants his younger brother to get educated and becomes a taxi driver Chhotu Ustad. Rajesh is ambitious and does not like to introduce a lowly taxi driver to his friends. But his girlfriend Manju (Bindya Goswami) invites his brother to a college event and his presence creates a comic situation because he is uneducated and does not know how to behave during a college event.
Amitabh Bachchan meets Mary, who runs a desi alcohol den and lives near his home. When he gets to know the exact nature of her business, he threatens her to leave the locality. In anger, she hires a few goons to smash him up. But the goons get smashed up by Govind instead since they try to rape her. After the smash-up, Govind advises her to earn her living honestly and through hard work. The next day, he sees her receiving her hard earned money at a construction site. When she comes out, she sees him and shows him her hard earned money. That is the time Krishna Janmashtami arrives and Govind and Mary sing and dance to the tune of this song.
Song: The lyrics of this song were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music was composed by Rajesh Roshan.
The man sings, “There is an uproar in the city. Lord Krishna has come. Take care of your mud pots. Behold! Look. he will not only steal your butter, but also your heart.”
The girl replies, “Who are you threatening? Who fears him? Let him come.”
The man warns, “Don’t talk too much. Don’t sway like this. Girl, you will shout, when he will overturn your pot in the middle of the road.”
The girl asks, “What would he have done if he were fair? Tell him to look at his image in the river Jamuna.”
The man replies, “Don’t walk on the streets with your shining bindi. Krishna is also the king of Gokul.”
The girl says, “If he gets the company of Radha, then Krishna will cry. She will tie her dupatta around his neck.”
Both the man and the girl are in a threatening spree. They bully each other in the name of Radha and Lord Krishna.
Video: Cinematography is by Praveen Bhatt.
The video begins with Amitabh Bachchan and his friends running with jumps toward the place where women are taking water-filled mud pots to their homes. Everybody is wearing simple dresses. He tells the others to be silent and with the other men hits the pots with pebbles to break them resulting in the women getting wet.
3 women walk towards each other and hit their water-filled pots against each other to break them. They also get wet. Amitabh Bachchan and others take away the pots from some other women and pour the water in them on the women to make them wet. Then they break the pots on the road.
Amitabh Bachchan with the other men begins to sing and dance. He indicates the handi (pot) tied at a height on the street. The men begin to make a human pyramid under the handi and Amitabh Bachchan climbs it to reach the top.
Once at the top, Amitabh Bachchan catches hold of the handi and casually glances down below to see Parveen Babi. Parveen Babi is decked up in a red sari worn in the kashti form, typical Maharashtrian style. Amitabh Bachchan breaks the handi and falls down with the rest of the human pyramid.
Parveen Babi laughs at his fall and begins to sing and dance. Amitabh Bachchan empties a water-pot on Parveen Babi. Then Madhu Malini (who is playing Amitabh’s Rakhi sister in the movie) appears with a water pot. Amitabh Bachchan sprints over to her, takes the pot from her and dances a little with it. Then he takes the pot with her safely to her home and leaves her there. That’s some difference between sisters and other women!
Having seen A K Hangal near the door of the house, Amitabh Bachchan seeks his blessings by touching his feet. A K Hangal shows another handi just further away from their home. When Parveen Babi sings that Krishna is dark and he should look at his image in river Jamuna, A K Hangal laughs.
Then men try to make a human pyramid with Amitabh Bachchan on top but they fall down. Amitabh Bachchan falls on Parveen Babi. A K Hangal, Vinod Mehra and Madhu Malini look at them in concern. The video ends with the men making another human pyramid and Amitabh Bachchan breaking the handi.
Artists: The playback of the song has been performed by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, while the onscreen performances are by Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Madhu Malini, Vinod Mehra and A K Hangal.
Cultural Influence: During Janmashtami, the pranks like breaking water pots carried by girls are prevalent in villages as well as cities. Dahi handi is performed everywhere today, i.e. in almost all the states of India. Amitabh Bachchan has performed the dance very gracefully as usual. The video can be watched for the foot-tapping music and the main leads’ dance. This song is so popular that during this festival all the pandals play this song.
