This is one of my favorite Rafi-Lata songs. I love this song not only because it is sung by Rafi Sahab, but also because of references to plants. My Post-Graduation in Botany is evidence of my love for plants. So is this song.Besides, every Majrooh Sultanpuri song has deep meaning in simple wordings.
Movie: This song appears in the 1972 romantic movie Ek Nazar (One Glance), produced by Anil Khanna and A C Diwan and directed by B R Ishara. The movie starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, late Nadira, late Rashid Khan, Raza Murad, late Tarun Bose, late Manmohan Krishna, late Asit Sen, etc.
Raghunath Tyagi (Tarun Bose) is a leading lawyer and public prosecutor. His only son Akash Manmohan is more interested in poems than in law or a business as he wants him to be. One day, Akash overhears a woman singing one of his recently published poems. He gets attracted to this woman named Shabnam (Jaya Bhaduri) and wants to marry her. However, his father is against the match because she is a prostitute. The friction between father and son goes to such an extent that Akash leaves his father’s home to stay in his friend’s inexpensive hotel. On the other side, the untouched and pure Shabnam wants to break free from the brothel, expecting Akash to do the needful. The brothel Madame Aminabai (Nadira) begins to increase her restrictions on Shabnam. Despite all restrictions, Shabnam goes to meet Akash with the help of her dance teacher (Rashid Khan).
It is during one such meeting that Shabnam and Akash sing this song.
Song: The music of this song has been composed by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and the lyrics have been penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The girl sings, “Every leaf and every herb know our condition. Only the flower does not know about it. The entire garden is in on it.”
The man asks, “If one loves another, why do people think that it is a crime? People laugh if someone struggles for someone else.”
The girl cheers him up with, “The situation itself is strange. Other will not understand our pain here.”
Then the girl assures the man, “Flowers of love will bloom, despite the coming of several storms. We will build our home in some garden.”
Reassured, the man continues, “This world might strike lightning on us. They may sow thorns on our path. Love will not listen to them. We will show them how we live, in the little time we have to live.”
The girl also agrees, “We will without a doubt live together, we have decided firmly today.”
They continue singing and promising themselves of a life together.
Video: Cinematography is by G Vasant.
The video begins with the shots of flowers and leaves. Then the voice of a lady is heard singing a song. Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan are singing the song onscreen. They are initially sitting on the curved branch of a large tree. Then they are seen sitting below a large and dense tree. Again and again, the camera focuses on different flowers and leaves. Every time they show the flowers, leaves and sky, the position of the lead pair changes. Amitabh Bachchan is now lying on the green grass. She is sitting nearby.
Next, they both are seen sitting together and singing. Then Amitabh Bachchan is lying on her lap. Throughout the song both are wearing the same simple dresses. The makers have not made them change their dresses taking the cinematic liberty. This way the video ends.
Artists: The playback is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi and onscreen performances are by Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan.
Cultural Influence: This pair is currently husband-wife. Amitabh Bachchan is very tall, while Jaya Bhaduri is very short. The song is worth watching several times for this pair as well as the deep meaning of this melodious song. The song is worthy of watching also for the greenery.
