This is an interesting and different song sung by Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey.
Movie: This song appears in the 1967 comedy movie Shagird (Disciple) produced by Subodh Mukherjee and directed by Samir Ganguly. The movie starred late Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu, late I S Johar, late Nazir Hussain, late Achla Sachdev, late Madan Puri, late Asit Sen, late A K Hangal, etc.
Confirmed bachelor Professor Brij Mohan Agnihotri (I S Johar) refuses to get married. Ramesh (Joy Mukherjee) considers him as his mentor. Kedarnath Badri Narayan (A K Hangal) lives in the jungles of Madhumati, with his daughter Poonam (Saira Banu). Ramesh is compelled to go to the jungle for a survey by his father (Nazir Hussain). Though Ramesh is under the influence of the Professor, the moment he sees Poonam dancing in the jungle he falls in love with her.
Kedarnath takes Poonam to his disciple the Professor’s place when he decides to go away on a pilgrimage. At that time, he reveals to the Professor that Poonam is his adopted daughter. The moment the professor sees Poonam, he also falls for her, throwing his confirmed bachelor status to winds. When he tells her that he is in love with her, she passes it off with a laugh. That is when he asks Ramesh for advice.
It is at this time that Ramesh sings this song for the Professor. Towards the end of the song, the Professor also sings the song in a comic manner in front of Poonam.
Song: The music of this song was composed by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and the lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The younger man tells the older one that he should not become crazy for the girl just like that. He should make sure that he changes himself to be the kind of person the girl likes. His advice is that first of all he should exercise and become like a youth. He also tells the senior gentleman to take some beauty treatments and concentrate on his style. He needed to keep himself updated with new fashion trends as well. For the younger man cotton clothes were out of fashion and silk was in.
The older man follows the advice of the younger man and transforms himself. Then he implements all the instructions given by the younger man to hilarious results.
Video: The cinematography is by N V Srinivas.
I S Johar is walking in the park on the green grass. His looks, walking style and attire are clumsy. Joy Mukherjee follows him and transforms him step by step. First, he makes him do physical exercise, then swimming and other gym exercises. Then he changes his dress. Post that he teaches him how to behave in front of girls, so that he can attract girls. After a full transformation, he returns to his home and applies what he had learnt in front of Saira Banu with comic effect. The video ends with Saira Banu laughing at him.
Artists: The playback was given by Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey. Onscreen the song has been performed by Joy Mukherjee, I S Johar and Saira Banu.
Cultural Influence: If there is any flaw in someone, their friends will correct them. This is natural. This video is worth watching several times if only for Rafi’s singing and I S Johar’s comic antics.
